I submitted a Journal 2h 30m ago about an art thief who was selling prints and claiming the work of lots of artists from DeviantArt as his own with his own watermarks over them and all.

Everyone mobilized against this threat. Both his pages (on facebook and a website) have now been taken down successfully.

Thank you all who contributed to eliminate this threat and illegal operation.

Thank you all.

In other news, A Russian News Agency and a Chinese News Channel mentioned me!

That's really good news, it's really unfair for the artists who exerted all the effort and gave all the time they have just to finish their masterpieces, then someone buff in--claiming he had done them, even had the guts to put his own watermarks on those works. Jeeez, I feel happy for you though.. this is goin' to be charged to experience. At least every one knows now that there is a modus operandi going on like that.. fair fight

I have yet to add a watermark to any of my art, but this has gotten me to rethink things. It is a shame that people like to steal other persons work, for profit no less!! and what is even scarier is that unless some one stumbles on my work being claimed by some one else I really am oblivious to it all. Not sure how else to protect myself other than a watermark. Even though I think it distracts from the art. Shame... That all being said, I really enjoy looking at your work, I have yet to see anyone that does the quality that you do with a pen. Just out of curiousity, what do you do when you make a mistake? Cover it up? Start over? Move on and add it to the art?

Post your works in resolutions no bigger than 800pixels across. Even if stolen, the prints will be pretty crappy.
When I make a mistake that is big enough to be noticeable... I throw the drawing in the garbage. There is no other way around it! Fortunately I have enough practice to make very few big mistakes (even though I make many small ones).

Another deviant found an ebay store selling his art as a print and art of many other people, sadly ebay didnt do anything to him.

Sometimes the perpetrators are minors (kids) and ebay and other big companies just don't even bother with filing lawsuits.
However they are bound by law to eliminate such accounts immediately as long as the authors file DMCA complaints.
Legally it is not up to ebay or other internet companies to prosecute perpetrators, it is up to the court of law and police forces, when a lawsuit is filed against the perpetrator. The companies do their part by eliminating the accounts and all photos and by providing the IP address to the court of law and police forces, so they can demand the internet service provider hosting that IP for the complete address, name and social security number of the perpetrator. He is then notified to go to court and is tried and convicted to pay a huge fine to the artist and to any company he used to sell stolen material.

(Posting it again here so others see it!) Sadly, they will most likely just change their domain name and FB page and do it all over again.  Seems to be the way it works.  Before they can get charges filed on them, the "cooperate" by taking down the sites, nothing is ever officially filed, therefore leaving it open for them to just easily change domains.  BUT... if we are all diligent about it and post here on DA when we see ours or each others artwork somewhere we will at least make it hard for them to keep doing so!  :) (Smile)

Sometimes people see their own work, and some other times the art of a very well know person. Some works are very recognizable.

I found a lot of the artist just by using keywords in the searchbar...   then rifle through it with the right categories turned on and you'll spot the original fast enough...

for some work I just throw the offending picture in google image search and a lot of times deviant art artist or favorite pages show up

I also use an addon called TinEye on firefox.  If I right-click on an image the option to "search image on tineye" shows up.   TinEye will analyze the image and come back with other places that the picture is posted and/or similar pieces.  I did a test on the above direct image links (I couldn't on the site because it was all flash rather than image files) and TinEye brought back the thief's site and below that showed the original dA posting.
